From Caped Crusader to Dark Knight: 75 Years of Batman @ Egyptian Theatre (Hollywood)
Batman first appeared in Detective Comics in May of 1939, and to celebrate, American Cinematheque is screening double features dedicated to the superhero two nights in a row. If you have never hiked up to the caves in Bronson Canyon that were used in the "Batman" television series while singing the theme song in your head, well, you're sorely missing out. Never fear, you can na na na na na na along with fellow fans during tonight's screening of the 1966 feature that was spawned from the show with Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin, followed by Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, the feature spinoff of the animated show. Saturday's double feature is of Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns, starring Michael Keaton as Batman.

OC Night Market @ OC Fair & Event Center (Costa Mesa)
Since its inception two years ago, the 626 Night Market has grown into a huge affair, drawing more than 50,000 people to its monthly event inspired by the nighttime markets of Asia. This year, they've decided to spread the fun around to other areas of SoCal, including this weekend's first-ever festivities in Orange County. Beginning at 4 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday, you can sample dishes from over 200 different vendors – the bacon jerky from Banzai Jerky, a lobster roll from the Lobsta Truck, lychee macarons from JoJo Cakes – and enjoy presentations from visual artists, musicians and dancers.

Thunder vs. Clippers @ Staples Center (Downtown)
Having begun the healing process after the shock and mayhem created by the unfortunate Donald Sterling, the Clippers were able to take care of business against the Warriors and head into the Western Conference Semifinals with a fresh attitude and outlook. Los Angeles took Game 1 against Oklahoma City, 122-105, on the Thunder's home court, but the OKC squad won Wednesday night's game by 11 points. Los Angeles has a fierce hunger to make it to the Finals, but don't expect this season's league MVP Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the rest of the squad to just let the Clips walk all over them. Game 3 tonight and Game 4 on Sunday afternoon are going to feature some exciting playoff basketball.

Cinquanta @ Greek Theatre (Griffith Park)
Just like 15-year-old Latinas celebrate their special birthday with a blowout celebration, the great Maynard James Keenan is commemorating his 50th year of life with this grand event taking place tonight and tomorrow night at the Greek. The L.A. singer-songwriter, musician, producer, winemaker and actor is known for his on-stage theatrics, so expect even more awesome performances from his bands Puscifer and A Perfect Circle than you have seen before. As a treat, Failure has agreed to hold reunion sets on both nights as the band's gift to MJK, who says, "This was the perfect opportunity to tick off one of my bucket list items in the form of a Failure reunion. What better birthday present could one ever hope for?"

The Return of Outdoor Movie Nights
Warm weather doesn't only mean beach days and wearing flip flips 24/7, it ushers in the season of having picnics and watching movies under the stars with friends. Tonight, two of the city's biggest outdoor movie event organizers kick off their schedules for the year. Cinespia sets up stakes at their usual site, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, with a screening of Harold Ramis' 1983 ode to the summer family road trip, National Lampoon's Vacation. Join the Griswolds (Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Dana Barron and Anthony Michael Hall) on their cross-country trek to Walley World. Or, you can head a little southwest to Pan-Pacific Park where Street Food Cinema opens their season with a 30th anniversary double feature of two awesome comedies from 1984, Revenge of the Nerds and Bachelor Party. It's an all-out '80s party with a costume contest, DJs spinning music from the decade, food trucks and special guest Curtis "Booger" Armstrong.

MOTHER'S DAY

Showing mom just how much you appreciate her doesn't mean you have to empty your wallet on an extravagant brunch at one of the city's best gourmet restaurants. Treat her to a homemade spread for brunch or dinner, or just spend the day doing something together. Go for a hike in Runyon Canyon or walk along the Santa Monica Pier. See a matinee of The Wizard of Oz at Aero Theatre, The Sound of Music at the Egyptian or Mildred Pierce at the Cinefamily. Take in exhibits at MOCA, LACMA or the Getty Center. Or head to a play, like the one below.

"Letters From Zora: In Her Own Words" @ The Pasadena Playhouse (Pasadena)
Most everyone has to read Their Eyes Were Watching God in school, and Zora Neale Hurston's own life is just as inspiring for women and men of every color. Playwright Gabrielle Denise Pina's "Letters From Zora: In Her Own Words" explores the author's opinions on integration, segregation and social justice through the dramatization of personal letters set to original music composed by Ron McCurdy and archival images collected by Margie Labadie. Get to know the woman behind the stories, as well as the friends and foes that comprised her world during the Jazz Age. Running through May 18.

Fallen Fruit of the Skirball @ Skirball Cultural Center (Brentwood)
From the vibrant red of its skin and seeds to the numerous health benefits contained in its juice, the pomegranate is quite an appealing fruit. Furthermore, the symbolic meanings of the fruit – particularly relating to marriage and fertility in Jewish, Persian, Greek and Turkish cultures – are many. After being inspired by an illustrated ketubbah (Jewish marriage contract) on display at the Skirball, David Burns and Austin Young of the L.A. art collaborative Fallen Fruit (who are known for using fruit as a medium) began work on this exhibit that focuses on the pomegranate, as well as the emotional, cultural and intellectual "ingredients that make for a great relationship." On display through Oct. 12.

Science & Food: How We Taste @ UCLA's Schoenberg Hall (Westwood)
The second lecture in UCLA's Science & Food series explores how humans taste through the lens of a scientist (Dr. Dana Small), a chef (Wylie Dufresne) and a food writer (Peter Meehan). Dr. Small explains how different flavors stimulate our brains and also sheds light on the link to obesity. Chef Dufresne, who is known for his inspired dishes that utilize molecular gastronomy techniques, tells of his approach to creating unique flavors and textures. Cookbook author and former New York Times writer Meehan shares his experiences with food and how they have shaped his writing.

Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights

HALLOWEEN

Theme Parks: If you don't want to stay home to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters or battle the throngs of people at West Hollywood's annual Halloween Carnaval, you still have three more nights to visit one of the SoCal theme park's annual Halloween haunts. There's Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios where you can dodge zombies in a prison like the one in "The Walking Dead" or try to escape demons from Evil Dead, Insidious. This year's Knott's Scary Farm Haunt has five new mazes, an Elvira stage show and the always entertaining "Hanging" with a gothic fairytale theme. Not to be outdone, Queen Mary's Dark Harbor offers six mazes (including a new circus-themed one), live musical performances, a burlesque show, costume contests and rides.

L.A. Haunted Hayride @ The Old Zoo (Griffith Park)
Tonight is the last night to experience the annual attraction that is "Based on Actual Events" of murder and paranormal activity that haven occurred at the park. There's also the In Between that has you navigating the maze in utter darkness and the Purgatory sideshow with a ride, psychic readers, the House of Mirrors, live shows and more.

Scream @ Exposition Park (South Los Angeles)
If you want a slightly tamer experience, Street Food Cinema hosts a screening of Wes Craven's 1996 slasher film. Written by Kevin Williamson, Scream stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette. Komodo, Dogtown Dog, the Wing Joint and other food trucks are scheduled to be on hand, and DJ Steady State will be spinning all night long.

The theme for the 14th annual celebration is El Magico Mundo de Los Alebrijes, the brightly colored folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. From noon to midnight, you can enjoy the procession, over 100 altars, Aztec ritual dancers, an art exhibition, costume contest, Mexican cuisine and arts and crafts. Don't miss performances by Saul Hernandez, Ceci Bastida, Chicano Batman and Quitapenas.

No-Ho Zombiewalk @ Metro Red Line Station at Lankershim/Chandler (North Hollywood)
Put on your finest zombie make-up and take part in this walk along Lankershim Boulevard, from the Metro station to Huston Street.

HARD Day of the Dead @ L.A. State Historic Park (Elysian Park)
This year's festival features two days of musical acts on four stages, so make sure to wear some comfortable shoes. Saturday's lineup includes Skrillex, Nero, Boys Noize, Bloody Beetroots, Kavinsky, Glaslamp Killer and Wolf + Lamb. The following day is even better with Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Pretty Lights, Cut Copy and, of course, Destructo.

Taste of Venice @ Electric Lodge (Venice)
The even highlights the neighborhood's culinary talent while supporting Inside Out Community Arts. It kicks off with a VIP Reception at 3 p.m. hosted by Adam Gerler and Jet Tila, with fare from Chaya Venice, Café Gratitude, Tasting Kitchen, Barnyard and more, along with music, cocktails, demos from local chefs. From 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., you can go on a walking/tasting tour of some of the best restaurants on Abbot Kinney, including my favorite Joe's. There's also Hal's, Willie Jane, Primitivo and Abbot's Pizza, among others, to visit.

Desaparecidos @ The Fonda (Hollywood)
The Nebraska five-piece released their only album, Read Music/Speak Spanish, in 2002, but finally released new material last year. The original lineup of Conor Oberst on vocals/guitar, Landon Hedges on bass/vocals, Matt Baum on drums, Denver Dalley on guitar and Ian McElroy on keyboards reunites for a national tour that stops in Los Angeles tonight. With lyrics that are definitely more political charged and more explosive melodies than the frontman's main Bright Eyes project, be forewarned: your ears will be ringing from the sonic assault on your eardrums at a Desaparecidos show.

Muse Live at Rome Olympic Stadium @ Vista Theatre (Los Feliz)
If you missed the British trio the last time they swung through town, then here's your chance to see their first concert film in 4K ultra high definition in my favorite L.A. movie theater before it comes out on CD/DVD and Blu-Ray Dec. 2. Shot in July of this year, the film captures what the band calls their biggest tour – which translates to your average group's stadium shows on steroids – complete with pyrotechnics, huge digital screens and a troupe of actors complimenting hits like "Uprising," "Supermassive Black Hole," "Time Is Running Out" and "Starlight." The screening begins at 9:45 p.m.

"Play Dead" @ Geffen Playhouse (Westwood)
The opening minutes of the show, created by magicians Todd Robbins and Penn & Teller's Teller, are performed in total darkness, setting the tone for a terrorizing and mesmerizing evening. Be prepared for some gruesome yet brilliant tricks woven with crafty storytelling and telepathy in this production that takes a look at life, death and the in-between.

Culture Collide Festival @ Various venues (Echo Park)
The three-day extravaganza invades Los Angeles with performances from bands representing all corners of the world. Aside from the many American acts – such as Liars, Rob Crow, NO and Bleached – Denmark's the Raveonettes, Canada/Germany's King Khan & the Shrines, the UK's Alice Russell, Fuck Buttons and Keaton Henson are all part of the lineup. UCB Theatre presents comedy sets from the likes of Maria Bamford, Nick Thune, Rory Scovel, Natasha Leggero and more. There is also a Creative Summit that includes panel discussions on the subjects of Innovators (Moby, Shepard Fairey and Dhani Harrison), International Festivals, licensing and Beers of the World this afternoon, as well as Record Labels, Bands and Bands and Spirits of the World on Friday.

Beyond Fest @ The Egyptian (Hollywood) and Aero (Santa Monica)
This new film festival, brought to you by American Cinematheque and Amity, combines the best in horror, sci-fi and fantasy now through Halloween. Events kick-off tonight with a screening of John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 and discussion with the film's star, Austin Stoker. There are more discussions with the likes of Richard Donner, Clive Barker, Jörg Buttgereit and Joe Begos. In addition, there are premieres of Why Don't You Play in Hell? and The Last Days on Mars with Live Schrieber, live performances from Goblin and a Nerdist Writers Panel. There's the eighth annual Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorthon on Oct. 26 with back-to-back screenings of six films that include Amityville II: The Possession, The Fly, Hell High and The Sentinel. A screening of F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu caps off the festivities on Oct. 31 with live musical accompaniment from Cliff Retallick.

Rob Zombie's Great American Nightmare @ Fairplex (Pomona)
Tonight marks the start of a new Halloween event curated by the musician and filmmaker that combines haunted-house attractions with a music festival, running through Nov. 2. Aside from three terrifying mazes based on Zombie's House of 1,000 Corpses, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto and The Lords of Salem, there are outdoor screenings of classics like The Phantom of the Opera, The Last Man on Earth and House on Haunted Hill. The musical lineup includes 3OH!3 tonight, Ozomatli Oct. 13, The Used Oct. 17, Andrew W.K. on Halloween and Rob Zombie Nov. 2.

J. Roddy Walston & The Business, Gringo Star @ Troubadour (West Hollywood)
I am obsessed with "Heavy Bells" from J. Roddy Walston & The Business new album, Essential Tremors, which released last month. The track builds from a twangy, head-nod inducing verse to an explosive chorus that defines the Baltimore band's soulful, southern and punk core. If they can translate even an ounce of the track's energy to the stage, then this will make for an incredible show. Atlanta's Gringo Star are set to get the crowd going with songs from their upcoming album, Floating Out to See (available Oct. 22).

If you're suffering "Bates Motel" withdrawals (Ugh, new episodes aren't coming until next year), then perhaps a screening of Alfred Hitchcock's classic film can help ease your pain. While Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga are incredible as the Bates in the television show, there's no denying the depths of creepiness that Anthony Perkins' performance reaches in the 1960 cinematic treasure. Angeleno band Grey Eastern performs at 6:30 p.m., and you can grab some movie snacks from food trucks such as the Wing Joint, Chanchos Tacos, Downtown Dogs and Umami Burger.

Artisanal LA @ L.A. Mart (Downtown)
I know some of you like to get all of your holiday shopping done before Thanksgiving, so why not get a head start this weekend at Artisanal LA's fall show. Aside from picking up handmade home goods and edible treats from over 200 purveyors, there are tastings, chef demos, workshops, panels, hosted drinks, DJs and giveaways to keep you busy. This show's makers on hand include Petersen Pottery, Lula Mae, Morning Glory Confections, Granola Mama's Handmade and Pressed Juicery.

Michael Franti & Spearhead @ The Fonda (Hollywood)
The NorCal group couldn't have picked a more apt title for their latest album than All People since their music appeals to just that. Since the early 1990s, they've successfully married funk, hip-hop, reggae, folk, jazz and rock with lyrics that inform and inspire listeners of every age to action. Their live performances are just as engaging, charged with electrifying energy and passion that is sure to ignite the Fonda's dance floor with new tracks like "I'm Alive (Life Sounds Like)" and "Show Me a Sign."

Atoms for Peace @ Hollywood Bowl (Hollywood)
To witness Thom Yorke's vocals filling the legendary venue is an unforgettable experience, and to see him fronting this rock supergroup – composed of Nigel Godrich on keys, synths and guitars, Flea on bass, Joey Waronker on drums and Mauro Refosco on percussion – should be phenomenal. You can expect to hear many of the songs from the album, AMOK, they released earlier this year, but you might also be treated to some unexpected covers and gems from Radiohead's deep catalog.

Pure Bathing Culture @ The Echo (Echo Park)
If you're a Vetiver, Foxygen or Damien Jurado fan, then you should definitely check out Pure Bathing Culture since they've all collaborated with Sarah Versprille and/or Daniel Hindman. The Portland, Ore. duo just released their debut album, Moon Tides, in August, and its gorgeous melodies, soaring vocals and dreamy synths captivate with tracks like "Dream the Dare," "Only Lonely Lovers" and "Golden Girl." I've seen them perform with Andy Cabic before, so I know both members put on a terrific live show.

John Fogerty: Wrote a Song for Everyone @ The Grammy Museum (Downtown)
The new exhibit, named for the singer-songwriter/guitarist's latest solo album, commemorates its opening with a sold-out performance from the former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman tonight. Running through January 2014, the exhibit features Fogerty's personal scrapbook from his time with CCR, the handwritten lyrics for "Proud Mary," their original recording contract, special guitars, photographs, costumes, posters and much more from his time with the band and as a solo artist.

"The Human Spirit" @ Stella Adler Theatre (Hollywood)
After the deaths of her husband, brother and mother, Carole Eglash-Kosoff dedicated her life to working in the black townships of South Africa where she interviewed over 50 people about their experiences under apartheid. While Nelson Mandela was in prison and citizens had to deal with clean water and sanitation issues, as well as the explosion of the AIDS epidemic, individuals of all colors and religions worked tirelessly to make South Africa a better place. Eglash-Kosoff published these inspiring stories in a book called The Human Spirit, which is adapted for the stage at Stella Adler for four performances through Sunday afternoon.

The Princess Bride @ Glendale Central Park (Glendale)
Although it was released 26 years ago, The Princess Bride's unforgettable characters, like Buttercup and Westley, Inigo Montoya, Fezzik and Prince Humperdinck are still so beloved. Street Food Cinema screens the Rob Reiner adaptation of the William Goldman novel on its inflatable screen after a performance from local band Grey Eastern. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., so you have plenty of time to grab some grub from the Currywurst, FryGirl or Umami Burger Truck, among others, and find the perfect place to set down your blanket.

Abbot Kinney Festival – on Abbot Kinney Blvd. between Brooks Ave. & Venice Blvd. (Venice)
The annual community festival continues to grow bigger each year, and its 29th installment is no exception. There are free musical performances from the likes of AM & Shawn Lee, Chain Gang of 1974, Y Luv, and Victory on two stages, one at Brooks Avenue and the other at the Brig (Palms Ave.). Downtown Dogs, Kogi, Border Grill and Baby's Badass Burgers are just a few of the food trucks that will be hanging out at Main Street and Rialto Avenue, while Firestone Walker, Stella Artois and Newcastle host beer gardens to quench your thirst.

West Hollywood Book Fair @ West Hollywood Park (West Hollywood)
The 12th annual festival features literature, art, film, culinary and music events on 12 outdoor stages and indoor venues. Christopher Rice, Sally Kellerman and Debbie Reynolds (with a screening of Singin' in the Rain afterwards) are all scheduled to discuss their current books. There are discussions panels on the city and its stories with Jonathan Gold, Laurie Ochoa and Joseph Mattson; punk music with D.H. Peligro, Jack Grisham and Dave Markey; and love and lust with Allison Gee, Diana Raab and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Evan Kleiman, Aida Mollenkamp and Claire Thomas are set to appear in the Culinary Pavilion. In addition, there's a poetry corner, artist workshops and LGBT-centric discussions.

Thai Food Festival @ Paramount Studios (Hollywood)
If you love the intricacies of Thai cuisine, then this the event for you. Join L.A. chefs such as Sang Yoon (He should have won "Top Chef Masters"!), David LeFevre and Susan Feniger, along with Portland's Andy Ricker, for a culinary tour of Thailand's four regions. Restaurants like Jitlada, Siam Sunset and Ruen Pair will also offer a sampling of authentic, traditional fare. Immerse yourself further in the culture with classical and folk dancing, umbrella painting and Muay Thai martial arts demos.

Menomena @ Echoplex (Echo Park)
Multi-instrumentalists Justin Harris and Danny Seim released Moms, the fifth Menomena album – their first as a duo – last year, and it's been called their heaviest and most aggressive to date. The guys are joined on the bill by another Portland duo, the Helio Sequence. Should make for quite a night.

Frightened Rabbit @ Avalon (Hollywood)
The Scottish fivesome just released a new EP, Late March, Death March, a few weeks ago, and frontman Scott Hutchinson says of the title track: "This song takes a fairly commonplace, mundane event (an argument on the way home from a night of drinking) and adds a fair bit of melodrama, mimicking the gasoline effect of pouring a drink on an argument, I suppose. I've always loved elevating 'the everyday' into something larger and louder than it actually is. These small things can seem so serious and earth shattering at the time, then you wake up and you can see how daft you both were." It's a sure bet that you'll hear some of these new tracks, as well as many from their fourth album, Pedestrian Verse from earlier this year at the show tonight.

Moby @ The Fonda (Hollywood)
Moby marks this week's release of his 11th studio album, Innocents, with a three-night celebration at the Fonda. The album, his first endeavor with an outside producer (Mark "Spike" Stent), concentrates on collaborations with the likes of Wayne Coyne, Damien Jurado and Inyang Bassey. Innocents also features contributions from Mark Lanegan, Cold Specks and Skylar Grey, who will all be appearing on the Fonda stage. Each night will be divided into two parts: songs from Innocents during the first half and selections from Moby's entire catalog in the second. These shows aren't just the debut of the new tracks, they're the only ones that he's planning to do worldwide in the near future. So, don't miss out!

Cinecon 49 @ The Egyptian (Hollywood)
The five-day celebration of silent and classic films features a memorabilia show, DVD and book signings and special showings of Somethings Gonna Live about Hitchcock producer Robert Boyle and Baby Peggy, a documentary about the silent film star. There are plenty of screenings of films like The Last Man on Earth and Way Out West tonight, Ramrod Friday, The Good Bad Man on Saturday, It Could Happen to You Sunday and Fifty Roads to Town on Monday. In addition, screen legend Shirley Jones receives a Career Achievement Award at a banquet on Sunday evening.

L.A. Fair @ Fairplex (Pomona)
Take advantage of opening day specials ($1 admission from 3 p.m.-6 p.m., $2 games from 9 p.m.-midnight and $2 rides and $1 sodas from 6 p.m.-9 p.m.), as the fair kicks off its 91st anniversary celebration. Aside from all the usual carnival attractions and wacky food to be experienced, there's a Star Trek exhibition, Beneath the Sea adventure, circus acts and the End of Summer Concert Series that includes nights with War (Aug. 30), Ke$ha (Sept. 7), Demi Lovato (Sept. 14) and Lynyrd Skynyrd (Sept. 20). Don't worry if you can't make it today, the fun keeps happening through Sept. 29.

Orange International Street Fair @ The Plaza at Chapman Ave. & Glassell St. (Orange)
Growing up, this fair always marked the end of summer – a final chance for me to run through the streets with my friends before school started. Anytime I visit now, I feel like I'm stepping back in time to those carefree days of my youth. As I got older, I really began to appreciate the sense of community the fair fosters, with food booths sponsored by local business and organizations offering treats from every cuisine imaginable, dance and music groups performing throughout the day on one of the four stages and arts and crafts tables set all around the center of the circle.

The Taste @ Paramount Pictures Studios (Hollywood)
This year's L.A. Times food and wine festival is hosted by the Times' Jonathan Gold, Betty Hallock, Jessica Gelt, Noelle Carter and Russ Parsons, Providence's Michael Cimarusti, Lukshon's Sang Yoon, Osteria Mozza's Nancy Silverton and mixologist Matthew Biancaniello and boasts three days of gastronomical goodness. There's an opening gala tonight where you can nibble on tastings, dance to a Beatles tribute band and mingle with the hosts, as well as some of the weekend's other participating chefs. Throughout the weekend there will be plenty of tastings, discussions, demos by chefs such as Ari Taymor (Alma), Sherry Yard (Helms Bakery) and KCRW's Evan Kleiman and a barbecue bonanza Labor Day Block Party on Sunday.

Jenny O. @ The Skirball (Brentwood)
The second event in the Skirball's Into the Night series is titled The Wild Side and marks the end of summer with an evening of DJ sets, cocktails, crafts, a screening of Dr. Seuss' The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T and a special performance from the lovely Jenny O. The headlining singer-songwriter plays new songs from her latest album, Automechanic, which are sure to get the crowd swaying back and forth. Another L.A.-based act, In the Valley Below, gets things going with their dreamy, atmospheric goodness.

Fiesta Hermosa @ Hermosa Beach Pier
The scorching weather is going to continue on through next week, so why not spend the holiday weekend at the beach? There will be plenty of live music, food booths, a beer garden, carnival rides and even a petting soon through Monday night. Make sure to take advantage of their free shuttle from the free parking lot at 15092 Aviation Boulevard in Manhattan Beach.

Street Food Cinema presents screenings of two films that celebrate friendship: Joel Schumacher's 1985 Brat Pack drama, St. Elmo's Fire, with Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson and Mare Winningham, and Ben Stiller's 1994 Gen X gem Reality Bites, with Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke and Janeane Garofalo. Local duo Wing and Hollow perform before the screening, and plenty of food trucks will be on hand  (The Greasy Weiner, Lobos Truck, Mercedes Binge) for all your munchie cravings.

The New Yorkers' Most Nights tour finally makes its way to Los Angeles for a two-night stand at the Greek. I can't think of a better way to bid adieu to summer than to spend it singing along to all the hits from the trio's breakout album from last year: "We Are Young," "Some Nights" and "Carry On." Undoubtedly, this calendar's show of the week.

Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival in Downtown, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills
The third annual event is the ultimate city-wide food extravaganza, offering four days of cooking demos, wine and spirit tastings, book signings, parties and so much more. There's a culinary demo with Giada De Laurentiis this afternoon, followed by her Festa Italiana this evening. Tomorrow includes a discussion with Michael Chiarello; Tacos and Tequila with Ray Garcia, Josef Centeno and Rick Bayless; a demo and Asian Night Market with Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. Fabio Viviani, Curtis Stone and Ziggy Marley and Ben Ford do cooking demos, Grant Achatz and the Grahm Crew do cocktail talks and Gavin DeGraw performs at Lexus Live on Grand on Saturday. The fest concludes with demos from the Hearty Boys and Duff Goldman, champagne and cheese seminars and the final Lexus Grand Tasting on Sunday.

Class of Chicago Comedy Festival @ The Fake Gallery (Wilshire Center)
Radio Titans co-founder Carl Kozlowski throws his second annual celebration of Chicago comedians who now reside in the City of Angels. This year features 40 comics over three nights of festivities, kicking off with two shows this evening. There's an All-Star Improv Extravaganza at 8 p.m. with the likes of Emo Philips, Bill Chott and the Farley Brothers, while the 10 p.m. portion includes a showcase of shorts by Willy Lazlo, Luke Matheny, Ryan Ridley, Scott Vinci and Dan Jelinek.

Fiesta La Ballona @ Veterans Park (Culver City)
The neighborhood's annual Party in the Park is a free weekend event celebrating community. Aside from carnival rides and games, there will be plenty of food booths and trucks, a beer and wine garden, performances from dance groups and rock, mariachi, jazz, bluegrass, samba and zydeco bands, events with some of the Galaxy Star Squad and Kings Ice Crew and a costume celebration and competition.

The Grandmaster, directed by Wong Kar Wai, stars Tony Leung as Ip Man. Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower star in the big-screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare's YA fiction series' first installment, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones; The World's End is the final flavor (mint chocolate chip, to be exact) in Edgar Wright's Cornetto trilogy, featuring co-writer Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, a pub crawl and aliens, of course; Adam Wingard directs You're Next, and since I can't even watch its ad without covering my eyes, it's probably a good one for you horror lovers. FYF Fest @ L.A. State Historic Park (Elysian Park)
Can't think of a better way to bid adieu to the final days of summer than spending two days immersed in music and comedy. Musical acts include My Bloody Valentine, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, MGMT, Beach House, Deerhunter, Devendra Banhart, the Breeders, Solange and so many more. Comedians include Doug Benson, Paul Scheer, Karen Kilgariff and Ron Funches. The sheer awesomeness of talent in the lineup makes this the can't-miss show of the week. Just make sure to avoid traffic and searching for a parking space by taking the Gold Line to the Chinatown station.

Edward Scissorhands @ Brookside Park (Pasadena)
I just heard an NPR feature extolling the comedic talents of Winona Ryder on the radio the other day, and was delighted to see that Street Food Cinema is hosting a screening of one of the most beloved films she stars in tonight. Tim Burton's 1990 film stars Johnny Depp as the titular hero who falls in love with the angelic Peg (Ryder). In addition to the screening, L.A. singer-songwriter Matt Braaten performs a set while the Grilled Cheese Truck, Fun Time Kettle Corn and Don Chow Tacos serve up the movie treats.

Boot Ride Rally @ The Happy Ending (Hollywood)
The Boot Campaign's annual event raises funds to support active military members as they return home and transition back to civilian life. The day begins with a motorcycle ride across the city leading to the Boot Rally at Happy Ending. "Sons of Anarchy" cast members will be on hand at the party, along with the Boot Girls, to enjoy a performance from Blackberry Smoke.

Alt-J (∆), Royal Canoe @ The Palladium (Hollywood)
I know, I just like pressing alt-j way too much, leaving ∆s all across my screen. While this first night is sold-out, you still might be able to score some tickets via Craigslist or for the show tomorrow evening. Either way, you don't want to miss the English quartet's North American tour in support of their debut album from last year, An Awesome Wave, which won the 2012 Mercury Prize. The Canadian six-piece of Royal Canoe open the show, and you're sure to be treated to some new tracks from their upcoming Today We're Believers album (out Sept. 3) too.

Sasha Grey @ Book Soup (West Hollywood)
The actress, model, musician and former porn star is also a published author whose debut novel, The Juliette Society, released in May. The book focuses on a film student named Catherine who is in the midst of a sexual awakening and becomes drawn into a secret sex society with members that include some very powerful people. Grey discusses and signs copies of her work tonight at Book Soup.

MUSIC

Lucius @ The Echo (Echo Park)
Another sold-out show, however, there might be a limited amount of tickets available at the door tonight, so it's worth a trip over to the Echo. You don't want to miss the NYC quintet perform in such a small club while you still can. Their debut full-length, Wildewoman, is going to be released Oct. 15, yet they've already built a solid reputation as a must-see live band and garnered praise from NPR, The New York Times and were named a Band to Watch by Rolling Stone. Believe me, you'll be dancing to songs like "Hey Doreen" in no time flat.

Every Thursday night through October, the seasonal market offers produce from farmers like Denny's Organic Farm and Cuyama Orchards and products from local artisans such as Alex's Fruits & Nuts and Farmhouse Kitchen. After shopping, you can grab some dumplings from Red Dot, fries from the Belgian Fry Shack, tacos from this week's visitors Kogi Truck, as well as beverages from the craft beer and wine garden then grab a seat for a screening of Karate Kid at 8:15 p.m. Throughout the night there are also musical performances from Tru Cisco, Xander Smith (acoustic) and Run Run Run.

Although the event is technically 12 days (running through July 26), dineLA Restaurant Week is definitely one of the best times of year to visit the city's best establishments, especially if you're on a budget. Places from Bouchon, Willie Jane, Rivera and Mo-Chica to El Cholo, Season's 52 and Mohawk Bend are serving prix-fixe meals from $15 to $45. Now is your chance to try a new restaurant or visit an old favorite at a special price.

The trio, led by vocalist/percussionist Gretta Rochelle and guitarist Jack Armondo, bring their unique brand of dark pop to town via their headlining national tour with fellow Chicagoans California Wives. In addition to their latest album, Leave Me Midnight, which came out earlier this year, My Gold Mask just released a new single, "Dangerous," that is just as menacing as the title promises.

Rogue Wave @ El Rey Theatre (Miracle Mile)
I absolutely love Nightingale Floors, the Bay Area band's fifth studio album that released last month, and since this is their first tour in three years, there is really no reason to miss this show. Just listen to the album's first two tracks, and you'll see what I mean. Whether you love their dreamy, psychedelic, somber or more poppy songs, the night is sure to be a memorable one.

Mean Girls @ Poinsettia Park (Mid-City West)
Street Food Cinema projects Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried on their oversized inflatable screen in the 2004 comedy Mean Girls, which had a screenplay penned by Tina Fey. The movie starts at 8:30 p.m., but come early for a set from Elle Rae, a contest hosted by Grant Cotter and food and drink from the Grilled Cheese Truck, Waffles Deliege and Perk Up Coffee.

Jeff Garlin's Reading Group @ Book Soup (West Hollywood)
If you love books and are currently experiencing "Curb Your Enthusiasm" withdrawals, then kill two birds with one stone and join Jeff Garlin's Reading Group for an evening. The subject for this discussion is Gillian Flynn's bestselling suspense novel from last year, Gone Girl, which centers around a Missouri couple, Nick and Amy Dunne, celebrating their fifth anniversary when Amy suddenly disappears. Comedian Garlin is also hosting a conversation with "Breaking Bad" director Vince Gilligan at Largo on Monday, but unfortunately that event is sold out.

Roadkill Ghost Choir @ Bootleg Bar (Westlake)
The folk rockers just released a new EP, Quiet Light, and cross the country from their Florida home base in its support. From the banjo twang of opener "Beggars' Guild" to the thundering bass drum and soothing horns of closer "In the Lion's Mouth," the six-piece pulls from their wide range of influences (Gram Parsons, Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, Radiohead) to appeal to all ears, and their live show promises to be just as pleasing.

The Postal Service @ Greek Theatre (Griffith Park)
I was lucky enough to catch the supergroup's first tour back when Give Up was released in 2003, and it is hands-down one of my favorite concerts ever. I was so excited when they decided to reissue the album for its 10th anniversary this year and officially reunite for a world tour that includes this two-night stand at the Greek. This is, of course, my pick for show of the week, so don't miss the opportunity to see Ben Gibbard, Jimmy Tamborello and Jenny Lewis on stage together at one of my favorite outdoor venues in the country.

Happy Hollows @ The Satellite (Silver Lake)
Celebrate Hump Day and the July 30 release of the L.A. trio's sophomore album, Amethyst, with a party of a show at the Satellite. You know I'm a sucker for a song with sing-along-able "ooh ohhs" such as "Galaxies" from the album that was recorded with producer Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, Fools Gold). Vocalist/guitarist Sarah Negahdari is the touring bassist for Silversun Pickups, and it will be fun to see her assume the frontwoman role with Happy Hollows.

Lucha VaVoom "Cinco in July!" @ The Mayan (Downtown)
Were you totally bummed when you didn't get tickets for Lucha VaVoom's sold-out Cinco de Mayo show? Well, you're not the only one, so the organization decided to meet the public's demand for another Cinco show tonight. Take advantage of this second chance to get your fill of Mexican-style lucha libre wrestling, traditional burlesque and comedic commentary because they won't be back for a while. No other event mixes sex and violence quite as well.

Surfer Blood, Terraplane Sun @ Santa Monica Pier (Santa Monica)
The 29th annual Twilight Concert Series returns to the pier for a kick-off show featuring the Florida foursome of Surfer Blood, who just released their sophomore effort, Pythons. Also performing is local band, Terraplane Sun, and their single "Get Me Golden" couldn't be a more apt song to usher in the pier's free summer series that takes place every Thursday, from 7 p.m.-10 p.m., through Sept. 12.

OC Fair @ Orange County Fair & Event Center (Costa Mesa)
Like most children, the county fair was always a highlight of my summers growing up, so the OC Fair will always hold a special place in my heart. Aside from the carnival games, rides and wacky food concoctions to sample, I loved checking out who was awarded the blue ribbon for best jam or quilt out of the many artists, farmers and craftspeople who enter the various competitions. As I got older, the concerts at Pacific Amphitheatre became the fair's big attraction. This year's lineup includes Colbie Caillat, Weezer, Flaming Lips, ZZ Top and Roger Daltrey.

Michael B. Jordan in Fruitvale Station

In Theaters This Week
Fruitvale Station is one of my most anticipated films of the season. It tells the true story of Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan) and the tragedy of his experiences on New Year's Eve 2008 in the Bay Area, and also stars Octavia Spencer and Melonie Diaz; Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade reunite for Grown Ups 2; I am a Guillermo del Toro fan beyond words, yet I'm not sure if all the giant robot battles of Pacific Rim are for me. However, the fact that it stars Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi could persuade me to check it out. Also in theaters: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag; Crystal Fairy & The Magical Cactus; The Hot Flashes; The Hunt; Pawn Shop Chronicles; Still Mine; V/H/S/2

Old Pasadena Film Festival
The free film series returns to Old Pas through July 27. Tonight's programming includes Woody Allen's gorgeous 2011 time-travel romp, Midnight in Paris, starring Owen Wilson as a screenwriter who gets to hang out with the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein every evening at the stroke of midnight. It screens at 8 p.m. at Distant Lands (20 S. Raymond Ave.), while Fantastic Mr. Fox plays at 8:30 p.m. in the One Colorado Courtyard (41 Hugus Alley). The 2009 stop-motion animated fantasy-comedy from Wes Anderson features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman, and is based on the classic by Roald Dahl.

SATURDAY, JULY 13

Grease Sing-A-Long @ Hollywood Bowl (Hollywood)
The Bowl once again transforms into the world's largest movie theater for the family-friendly tradition, which coincides with the film's 35th anniversary. Hosted by Didi Conn ("Frenchy"), the pre-show features a performance by Sha Na Na followed by a screening of the film, complete with subtitles so that everyone can sing along with the lyrics to each song. From "Summer Nights" to "Greased Lightnin'" and "You're the One That I Want," the entire night is sure to be a blast.

Edgar Wright Double Feature @ Exposition Park (South Los Angeles)
In anticipation of Edgar Wright's Aug. 23 release of The World's End, Street Food Cinema presents an evening dedicated to the director's other works with Nick Frost and Simon Pegg. Up first is a performance from local band Fallen Riviera, then make sure to get a bunch of munchies from trucks like Mercedes Binge, Rollin' Rib BBQ and Ta Bom before settling in for the screenings of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Cash'd Out @ Saint Rocke (Hermosa Beach)
If you're a fan of Johnny Cash and have yet to check out the SoCal treasure known as Cash'd Out, then here's your chance. Vocalist Douglas Benson sounds just like Cash as he belts out the Man in Black's hit songs, but the entire band's musical prowess and showmanship pushes their performances from mere tributes to capturing the energy and spirit that is associated with the legend. You don't just have to take my word for it, members from Cash's inner circle from W.S. Holland to Loy Robin and even Cindy Cash have all endorsed Cash'd Out. So head out to the South Bay, and see them for yourself.

Bastille Day @ Bouchon (Beverly Hills)
If you're a Francophile like me, then you know that today is French National Day, otherwise known as Bastille Day, commemorating the storming of the Bastille in 1789. While France celebrates with parades and fireworks, Thomas Keller and Co. pay tribute to the event with a special day at Bouchon, featuring $2 oysters, grilled treats, wine and cocktails, live music and a screening of Baz Luhrnmann's 2001 musical Moulin Rouge in the Beverly-Canon Gardens, part of their ongoing Sunday Movie Nights series.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 17

Mayer Hawthorne @ The Troubadour (West Hollywood)
Even though this show is sold out, I'm hoping you can score some tickets on Craigslist or at the door, because it's definitely the show of the week. My fellow L.A. transplant via Michigan has carved a niche for his thoroughly unique sound and celebrates the release of his third album, Where Does This Door Go, tonight with this hometown show. NPR is currently streaming the album, so you can practice dancing to the 14 tracks, which feature assists from Pharrell Williams, Jack Splash, Oak and Greg Wills.

Join Street Food Cinema for a screening of the Brat Pack drama. Written and directed by John Hughes, The Breakfast Club stars Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall and Ally Sheedy as a group of unlikely friends trapped together in Saturday detention. Local band Fallen Riviera plays a set before the screening, and food trucks like Slummin Gourmet, Belly Bombz, and the Melt Bus are going to be on hand all night.

I am so sad that I will be out of town this weekend, or else I would definitely take this tour with one of my favorite L.A. artists, Gary Baseman, as he shares some of the locations that are meaningful to his life and career. You'll visit his childhood neighborhood, Wacko in East Hollywood and Canter's Deli where his mother worked for over 30 years. The tour is led by Jim Heimann, friend of Baseman, an L.A. historian and the executive editor of TASCHEN America. If you can't make the tour, please visit his current exhibition, Gary Baseman: The Door Is Always Open, at Skirball through Aug. 18.

Film Independent's annual event showcases the best in world cinema, and its 19th festival boasts narratives from emerging filmmakers like Aaon Douglas Johnston (My Sister's Quinceanera), Janis Nords (Mother, I Love You) and Kamal K.M. (I.D.), thought-provoking documentaries, special screenings of Pedro Almodóvar's I'm So Excited!, Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling's latest Only God Forgives, Vera Farmiga in The Conjuring and Steve Carrell and Toni Collette in The Way, Way Back, as well as free showings of Dazed and Confused and Brasslands for the public. There are also panels on women editors, iconic costume design and Indiewire; conversations with this year's Spirit of Independence Award winner David O. This year commemorates 13 years since the release of the Portland, Ore. band's breakthrough album, Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia, so they just released a newly remastered and expanded anniversary edition of the landmark release earlier this week. The deluxe edition includes an additional disc full of session outtakes, early and alternate mixes and demos of the original 13 tracks. The group also celebrates the anniversary with a slew of special performances of Thirteen Tales in its entirety, which begins its West Coast run tonight at the Wiltern.

Hugh Hefner has said, "I've had a lot of things to be proud of in my life. But nothing more, quite frankly, than the Jazz Festival," and considering all of his accomplishments that is a huge statement. However, if you've ever attended the fest, Hef's words might not be such a big surprise. Celebrating its 35th year, the two-day event features performances by legends such as Herbie Hancock, Jeffrey Osborne, guitarist Lee Ritenour, Sheila E. and Taj Mahal. Also on the bill are Angelique Kidjo and India.Arie.

Street Food Cinema presents a screening of the musical comedy starring Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson and Anna Camp as a college singing group taking on their male campus rivals. The evening is hosted by comedian Grant Cotter and features a performance from local band Raheem Cohen. The Mandoline Grill, Cousin's Maine Lobster, India Jones, Seoul Sausage and Mercedes Binge are just a few of the food trucks that will be on hand as well.

Then, after dinner, treat Dad to American Cinematheque's evening of action. First up is Sean Connery as Bond as he takes on Auric Goldfinger and relishes the company of Honor Blackman and Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. Afterwards, Steven Spielberg directs Harrison Ford in his iconic Indiana Jones role with Connery stepping into the shoes of his father who has been kidnapped by the Nazis in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I remember seeing this third Indy film with my own dad back in 1989.

The former frontman of the Czars resides in Iceland and visits the states in support of his sophomore effort, Pale Green Ghosts, which released last month. But don't expect to spend an evening down in the dumps, he's got all-out dance tracks, like "Black Belt," which are guaranteed to get you moving. The Top Chef Masters winner penned a memoir, Yes, Chef, which was just released in paperback and documents his life as an adopted Ethiopian child growing up in Sweden and eventually taking New York's culinary world by storm. L.A. chefs Sang Yoon and Sherry Yard celebrate the chef with a cocktail party, serving dishes inspired by his book, such as Berbere-spiced leg of lamp and smoked eel. In addition Yard serves some of her awe-inspiring desserts and Yoon presents some Father's Office beer and cocktail favorites.
