Get with THE PROGRAM

THURSDAY, MAY 15

ART

Artopia @ Grand Central Market (Downtown)

Sometimes I just love walking through the Arts District to look at all the street art and just absorb all of the creativity that is in the air in the neighborhood. LA Weekly celebrates the area's vibrant art scene with this event that brings together live art installations, music, film and fashion under one roof. Since the venue is Grand Central Market, there is plenty of food and drink to be purchased from vendors who are staying open after regular hours (Horse Thief, Sticky Rice, Valerie at GCM, G&B Coffee, to name a few) as you're walking through the exhibits.

COMEDY

TMZ Comedy Tour @ The Ice House (Pasadena)
Often times what makes the bits of celebrity gossip revealed on "TMZ" so riveting are the people that deliver them. That's because some of those personalities have been entertaining crowds from comedy stages for years. Tonight's stand-up event gives four of the TV show's regulars – Brian McDaniel, Rick Mitchell, Katie Hayes and Myke Anthony – the spotlight to share their witty commentary on pop culture and beyond.

FRIDAY, MAY 16

You are sure to work up a sweat, let go of some of the week's stress and have some fun.

SPORTS

Amgen Tour of California (Santa Clarita to Mountain High)

One of the best parts of the Tour de France broadcast in the summer is watching the fans that stand on the sidelines, yelling at the top of the their lungs while wearing awesomely ridiculous outfits to ensure they get on TV. If you have ever longed to be one of those passionate crowd-goers, then don't miss your chance to cheer on world-class riders, like Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish, as they breeze through Southern California. Today they ride from Newhall to Palmdale then up to Big Bear and Mountain High ski resort. Saturday's course runs from Town Center Mall in Santa Clarita and over to Mount Wilson before passing the Rose Bowl, Colorado Street Bridge and Old Town Pasadena. The tour's final stage takes place on Sunday in Thousand Oaks, and it will be thrilling to see who ends up wearing the yellow jersey.

SATURDAY, MAY 17

ART

Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary Art Show @ Gallery 1988 West (Mid-City West)
"Are you troubled by strange noises in the middle of the night? Do you experience feelings of dread in your basement or attic? Have you or your family ever seen a spook, spectra or ghost? If the answer is 'yes,' then don't wait another minute. Pick up the phone and call the professionals…" This year marks many ups and downs for the supernatural comedy: losing one of its writers and stars (Harold Ramis), celebrating its 30th anniversary and the confirmation of a third Ghostbusters film coming to theaters next year. If you're a fan, then you should definitely head over to this touring exhibit's L.A. stop at Gallery 1988 West through June 1. Every piece in the show is awesome, from DKNG's Ecto-1 (above), Joshua Budich's They're Here to Save the World, Tom Whalen's Confectionary Kaiju and Richard Kelly's Keymaster.

FASHION

Super Saturday @ Barker Hangar (Santa Monica)
If you love searching for bargains at estate or yard sales every weekend, then this "Rolls Royce of garage sales" (as dubbed by the New York Times) is for you. Hosted by celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and model/actress Molly Sims, Super Saturday not only offers you luxury brands for 30- to 50-percent off, all proceeds go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. You can get clothes and accessories for the whole family for a bargain and help a good cause while you're at it.

FILM

Office Space @ Santa Monica High School's Memorial Greek Amphitheatre (Santa Monica)
Eat|See|Hear's outdoor movie-food-music series is in full swing for the summer, and tonight's feature is one of my favorite comedies. If you're loving Mike Judge's new series, "Silicon Valley," on HBO, then you should see Office Space, his first feature-length film. It stars Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston, Gary Cole and Stephen Root in a story about workers who can't stand their job or their greedy boss. The End of Summer perform a set before the movie, so grab some grub from food trucks like Son of a Bun, India Jones and Coolhaus and settle in for an awesome night under the stars.

FOOD

California Strawberry Festival @ Strawberry Meadows of College Park (Oxnard)

As you're driving up the 101 with your windows down on a hot summer day, It's hard to ignore the pleasant, hunger-inducing aromas as you pass the many strawberry farms located in Ventura County. I'm salivating just thinking about it. You can easily satisfy your every strawberry craving today and tomorrow at this year's California Strawberry Festival. Aside from treats like chocolate-dipped strawberries, strawberry pizza, strawberry funnel cake and strawberry margaritas, there are performances from the Young Dubliners and Mariachi Divas, a strawberry pie eating challenge, relay race, hat competition and shortcake build-off contest.

SUNDAY, MAY 18

SHOPPING

Artists & Fleas @ Arts District (Downtown)
What could be more relaxing on a Sunday afternoon than perusing the wares of artists, designers and vintage sellers all in one place? This curated marketplace that is open all year long in Brooklyn and Manhattan finally makes its way west. With local vendors like Gull and Marie, Soiyl, Mt. Washington Pottery and Groceries Apparel, you can pick up clothes, jewelry and home goods. There are food vendors and a DJ on site for you to enjoy as you take a break from shopping.  Also Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 21

MUSIC

Isabel Beyoso @ Molly Malone's (Beverly Grove)
This is the perfect show to get you over the mid-week hump. The L.A. singer-songwriter, model and actress released her debut full-length, It's Time, last summer and is performing a special acoustic set tonight. From the heart-wrenching "Pursue Me" to the sassy "Better Than Nothing" and delightful "Mm-Mm Spell," Beyoso crafts songs that touch upon your every mood. When she performs them live, they are absolutely entrancing.

From Caped Crusader to Dark Knight: 75 Years of Batman @ Egyptian Theatre (Hollywood)
Batman first appeared in Detective Comics in May of 1939, and to celebrate, American Cinematheque is screening double features dedicated to the superhero two nights in a row. If you have never hiked up to the caves in Bronson Canyon that were used in the "Batman" television series while singing the theme song in your head, well, you're sorely missing out. Never fear, you can na na na na na na along with fellow fans during tonight's screening of the 1966 feature that was spawned from the show with Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin, followed by Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, the feature spinoff of the animated show. Saturday's double feature is of Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns, starring Michael Keaton as Batman.

FOOD

OC Night Market @ OC Fair & Event Center (Costa Mesa)
Since its inception two years ago, the 626 Night Market has grown into a huge affair, drawing more than 50,000 people to its monthly event inspired by the nighttime markets of Asia. This year, they've decided to spread the fun around to other areas of SoCal, including this weekend's first-ever festivities in Orange County. Beginning at 4 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday, you can sample dishes from over 200 different vendors – the bacon jerky from Banzai Jerky, a lobster roll from the Lobsta Truck, lychee macarons from JoJo Cakes – and enjoy presentations from visual artists, musicians and dancers.

SPORTS

Thunder vs. Clippers @ Staples Center (Downtown)

Having begun the healing process after the shock and mayhem created by the unfortunate Donald Sterling, the Clippers were able to take care of business against the Warriors and head into the Western Conference Semifinals with a fresh attitude and outlook. Los Angeles took Game 1 against Oklahoma City, 122-105, on the Thunder's home court, but the OKC squad won Wednesday night's game by 11 points. Los Angeles has a fierce hunger to make it to the Finals, but don't expect this season's league MVP Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the rest of the squad to just let the Clips walk all over them. Game 3 tonight and Game 4 on Sunday afternoon are going to feature some exciting playoff basketball.

SATURDAY, MAY 10

MUSIC

Cinquanta @ Greek Theatre (Griffith Park)
Just like 15-year-old Latinas celebrate their special birthday with a blowout celebration, the great Maynard James Keenan is commemorating his 50th year of life with this grand event taking place tonight and tomorrow night at the Greek. The L.A. singer-songwriter, musician, producer, winemaker and actor is known for his on-stage theatrics, so expect even more awesome performances from his bands Puscifer and A Perfect Circle than you have seen before. As a treat, Failure has agreed to hold reunion sets on both nights as the band's gift to MJK, who says, "This was the perfect opportunity to tick off one of my bucket list items in the form of a Failure reunion. What better birthday present could one ever hope for?"

FILM

The Return of Outdoor Movie Nights

Warm weather doesn't only mean beach days and wearing flip flips 24/7, it ushers in the season of having picnics and watching movies under the stars with friends. Tonight, two of the city's biggest outdoor movie event organizers kick off their schedules for the year. Cinespia sets up stakes at their usual site, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, with a screening of Harold Ramis' 1983 ode to the summer family road trip, National Lampoon's Vacation. Join the Griswolds (Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Dana Barron and Anthony Michael Hall) on their cross-country trek to Walley World. Or, you can head a little southwest to Pan-Pacific Park where Street Food Cinema opens their season with a 30th anniversary double feature of two awesome comedies from 1984, Revenge of the Nerds and Bachelor Party. It's an all-out '80s party with a costume contest, DJs spinning music from the decade, food trucks and special guest Curtis "Booger" Armstrong.

SUNDAY, MAY 11

MOTHER'S DAY

Showing mom just how much you appreciate her doesn't mean you have to empty your wallet on an extravagant brunch at one of the city's best gourmet restaurants. Treat her to a homemade spread for brunch or dinner, or just spend the day doing something together. Go for a hike in Runyon Canyon or walk along the Santa Monica Pier. See a matinee of The Wizard of Oz at Aero Theatre, The Sound of Music at the Egyptian or Mildred Pierce at the Cinefamily. Take in exhibits at MOCA, LACMA or the Getty Center. Or head to a play, like the one below.

THEATER

"Letters From Zora: In Her Own Words" @ The Pasadena Playhouse (Pasadena)
Most everyone has to read Their Eyes Were Watching God in school, and Zora Neale Hurston's own life is just as inspiring for women and men of every color. Playwright Gabrielle Denise Pina's "Letters From Zora: In Her Own Words" explores the author's opinions on integration, segregation and social justice through the dramatization of personal letters set to original music composed by Ron McCurdy and archival images collected by Margie Labadie. Get to know the woman behind the stories, as well as the friends and foes that comprised her world during the Jazz Age. Running through May 18.

TUESDAY, MAY 13

ART

Fallen Fruit of the Skirball @ Skirball Cultural Center (Brentwood)
From the vibrant red of its skin and seeds to the numerous health benefits contained in its juice, the pomegranate is quite an appealing fruit. Furthermore, the symbolic meanings of the fruit – particularly relating to marriage and fertility in Jewish, Persian, Greek and Turkish cultures – are many. After being inspired by an illustrated ketubbah (Jewish marriage contract) on display at the Skirball, David Burns and Austin Young of the L.A. art collaborative Fallen Fruit (who are known for using fruit as a medium) began work on this exhibit that focuses on the pomegranate, as well as the emotional, cultural and intellectual "ingredients that make for a great relationship." On display through Oct. 12.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 14

FOOD

Science & Food: How We Taste @ UCLA's Schoenberg Hall (Westwood)

The second lecture in UCLA's Science & Food series explores how humans taste through the lens of a scientist (Dr. Dana Small), a chef (Wylie Dufresne) and a food writer (Peter Meehan). Dr. Small explains how different flavors stimulate our brains and also sheds light on the link to obesity. Chef Dufresne, who is known for his inspired dishes that utilize molecular gastronomy techniques, tells of his approach to creating unique flavors and textures. Cookbook author and former New York Times writer Meehan shares his experiences with food and how they have shaped his writing.

THURSDAY, MAY 1

CULTURE

Cinco de Mayan Spectacular @ The Mayan (Downtown)
What could say 'let's celebrate Mexican heritage and pride' more than the high-octane lucha libre wrestling, burlesque striptease routines and hilarious comedic commentary of Lucha VaVoom? While they put on shows for various other holidays throughout the year, their Cinco de Mayo spectaculars are probably the most popular. If you're a regular, then you most likely already have your ticket for Thursday or tonight's show in hand. But if you have never experienced the outrageous sexo y violencia at one of their events, you better hop to it because it will undoubtedly sell out. Also Friday.

FRIDAY, MAY 2

FILM

In Theaters This Week
Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are so adorable, I could watch them act together in anything, add Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti and Felicity Jones into the mix for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and we've got ourselves a winner; Elizabeth Banks plays a reporter who is stranded in downtown L.A. without a phone, car, ID or money and only has eight hours to get to an important job interview in Walk of Shame. Also in theaters: Belle; Friended to Death; Ida

MUSIC

Philip Glass @ Royce Hall (Westwood)
If you've never heard of Philip Glass, I'm not sure I want you reading Jigsaw anymore. Just kidding, well, kind of. He is one of the most influential composers in the world today, and his scores for the Qatsi film trilogy are epic. He has also scored films like Kundun, The Truman Show and The Hours, written operas, symphonies and sonatas, and has collaborated with artists that range from David Byrne and Allen Ginsberg to Aphex Twin and Leonard Cohen. See Glass perform in his interpretation of La Belle et la Bête tonight, with the Philip Glass Ensemble Saturday or with Maki Namekawa and Sally Whitewell on Sunday. It's for your own good.

SATURDAY, MAY 3

LITERATURE

California Bookstore Day @ Various bookshops (Citywide)
Independent bookstores are taking part in this party throughout the state with 13 exclusive books and art pieces being offered in addition to their regular inventory. Think Record Store Day, but for book lovers. Some of the special items are a limited bound copy of Neil Gaiman's The Sleeper and the Spindle, a signed Hugo lithograph and a cool punk rock writers journal from artist Wendy MacNaughton. Local purveyors taking part include Skylight Books in Los Feliz, Small World Books in Venice and Book Soup in West Hollywood.

SPORTS

Kentucky Derby Day @ Santa Anita Park (Arcadia)

I've always wanted to go to the Kentucky Derby to wear and admire the crazy awesome hats that ladies put on their heads for the event. One or five Mint Juleps in those fancy silver cups sound so good right now, too. Although we are thousands of miles away from Churchill Downs, Angelenos can still take part in some derby fun at our local track in Arcadia. There will be live bluegrass music, a hat contest (YAY), food trucks, a craft beer garden and plenty of competitive races to wager on.

Kings vs. Ducks @ Honda Center (Anaheim)
It's a SoCal battle to advance to the Conference Finals in this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs, but aaahhh, who do I root for, my childhood hometown Ducks or my current hometown Kings? Anaheim finished the regular season at the top of the west, just one point behind Boston, while Los Angeles became only the fourth team in NHL history to win a series after losing their first three games when they overcame San Jose on Wednesday. For my own sanity, I think I'm going to stay neutral on this one and just be happy for whichever team goes on to face Chicago or Minnesota.

SUNDAY, MAY 4 - May the Fourth Be With You!

FILM

Spaceballs @ Egyptian Theatre (Hollywood)

If you got my little May the Fourth joke above, then a) we should be friends and b) you are probably already planning some kind of Star Wars-related activity for today. If you love the George Lucas movies and can't wait to see what J.J. Abrams does with the franchise, then you will love this Mel Brooks satire starring Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, John Candy and Daphne Zuniga as much as I do. Even if you have seen Spaceballs 20-plus times, lines like "We were told to comb the desert so we're combing it" and "May the schwartz be with you!" never get old.

MONDAY, MAY 5

CULTURE

Cinco de Mayo Festival @ Olvera Street (Downtown)
The three-day festival begins on Saturday, but today is the official holiday that celebrates Mexico's 1862 victory over French forces near the city of Puebla. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., there is plenty of popular and traditional music, dancing and food to be experienced. Grab a strawberry-filled churro, take in some mariachi music and party it up.

TUESDAY, MAY 6

FILM

Manhunter @ Egyptian Theatre (Hollywood)
I am such a scaredy cat when it comes to horror and suspense, but even I am intrigued by Thomas Harris' most famous character, Hannibal Lecter. In addition to the novels featuring the serial killer, I love The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal films. Maynard Keenan, frontman of Puscifer and Tool, is also a fan of the character, as evidenced by his selection of Manhunter in the Modern School of Film's Film: Masters series, which screens works handpicked by renown cultural figures like Keenan. The 1986 film from Michael Mann was based on Harris' first novel to feature Lecter, Red Dragon, and stars William Peterson and Brian Cox. Keenan will be on hand after the screening for a discussion about the film moderated by Robert Milazzo.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 7

MUSIC

Frances Cone @ Hotel Café (Hollywood)
The Brooklyn-based trio of Christina Cone, Jeff Malinowski and Andrew Doherty just met within the past year, but as heard on their self-titled EP that released last week, they clearly belong together. With catchy choruses and beautiful harmonies, songs like "Better Man" and "June" will grab your ear and heart. This is the perfect show to get you through your mid-week slump.

Thursday, April 24, 2014

Events for April 24-30, 2014

THURSDAY, APRIL 24
(T. Charles Erickson)

THEATER

"Man in a Case" @ The Broad Stage (Santa Monica)
Perhaps you know Mikhail Baryshnikov from his dancing days with the American Ballet Theatre, his roles in films like White Nights and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit or on television as Aleksandr Petrovsky, Carrie Bradshaw's lover in the final season of "Sex and the City." The brilliant dancer, choreographer and actor is able to draw from his experiences in these art forms in this new production. Adapted from two Anton Chekhov short stories, Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar's "Man in a Case" fuses theater, dance, music and video. Running through May 10, this is a production not to miss.

FRIDAY, APRIL 25

FILM

In Theaters This Week
Paul Walker, David Belle and RZA in Brick Mansions; Steven Knight's Locke stars just one actor, Tom Hardy, who gives one of his best performances yet, in just one setting, his car; Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton are all involved with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ("Game of Thrones"' Jaime Lannister) in Nick Cassavetes' The Other Woman. Also in theaters: From the Rough; The German Doctor; Last Passenger; The Quiet Ones; Walking with the Enemy

Two by John Hughes @ New Beverly Cinema (Fairfax)
It's been five years since we lost the director, producer and screenwriter whose films continue to impact adolescents today. Whether you're a troublemaker, jock, geek, princess or basket case, you can identify with one of the characters portrayed by the Brat Pack (Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy) in 1985's The Breakfast Club from Hughes. It's the 30th anniversary of the second Hughes' movie playing tonight, Sixteen Candles, which also stars Ringwald and Hall, along with Michael Schoeffling and Gedde Watanabe as the unforgettable Long Duk Dong. The double feature begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight and also runs twice tomorrow.

LITERARY

Diane Keaton @ Wilshire Ebell (Mid-Wilshire)

I was just made fun of for watching The Big Wedding, but what can I say? I am a sucker for any rom-com (Annie Hall, Something's Gotta Give and, yes, even Because I Said So) starring Diane Keaton. She's a phenomenal actress – just watch The Godfather, Reds or Marvin's Room if rom-coms aren't your thing – but even more she's a woman who is comfortable in her own skin. In her new book, Let's Just Say It Wasn't Pretty, which releases next week, she discusses the notion of ideal beauty, its impact on her career and her role as an international style icon. Your ticket to her appearance tonight in support of the book includes an autographed copy.

SATURDAY, APRIL 26

COMEDY

Chelsea Handler @ The Forum (Inglewood)
While many can take offense or be put off by comments made by the comedian and the panel on her E! talk show, there's no denying that Chelsea Handler has made a name for herself by taking risks and always speaking her mind. "Chelsea Lately" is taking its final bow in the fall, but Handler will continue to entertain, whether it's on another show, on stage with shows like tonight's or through her bestselling books, three of which have reached No. 1. Her latest book, Uganda Be Kidding Me, was released in March, and in it she shares her adventures from abroad. Expect to hear several of those stories tonight at the Forum.

FILM

Lebowski Fest @ The Fountain Bowl (Fountain Valley)

Friday night's movie party with Jeff Bridges at the Wiltern is sold out, but you can still take part in the annual tribute to the Coen brothers' beloved comedy from 1998 by attending the bowling party tonight. Although the bowling alley used in the movie was demolished several years ago, the atmosphere created by the awesome fans of the film more than makes up for the stand-in location. Aside from bowling, there are costume and trivia contests and appearances by the real-life Dude, Jeff Dowd, Jim Hoosier (Liam) and the bowling adviser for the film, Barry Asher.

MUSIC

Desert Daze @ Sunset Ranch Oasis (Mecca)
The venue for Moon Block Party's annual festival is truly a desert oasis, with three lakes nestled within a picturesque 163-acre ranch surrounded by palm trees and mountains. Whether you plan on camping underneath the stars or living it up at a nearby resort, you'll need plenty of rest after taking in this year's incredible lineup. Acts include Blonde Redhead, the Raveonettes, Liars, Autolux, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Allah-Las, Mystic Braves and Deap Vally.

Black Sabbath @ Hollywood Bowl (Hollywood)
Heavy metal and the Bowl isn't a frequent mix, but there is no doubt that these legendary hard rockers belong on this famous stage. Their songs have been the soundtrack to moments in all of our lives. It doesn't matter if your first album was Paranoid or you just recognize "Iron Man" from the superhero movie, there is at least one Black Sabbath tune that means something to you. It's because the group crafts memorable songs, including "God Is Dead?," "Loner" and "End of the Beginning" from their latest album, last year's 13. It's no wonder that the band has sold over 70 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Don't miss your chance to see them perform at a venue like the Bowl.

SUNDAY, APRIL 27

MUSIC

David J @ Los Globos (Silver Lake)
Bring your weekend to a close with an evening of the truly avant-garde with David John Haskins (aka David J) the producer, writer and bassist for Bahaus and Love and Rockets. The musician is poised to release his latest solo effort, An Eclipse of Ships, next month, and his sultry tour in support of the album stops at Los Globos tonight. Yes, I said, "sultry." In addition to unveiling songs from the new release, you can expect to feast your eyes on some burlesque entertainment from Olivia Bellafontaine. Ooh la la.

TUESDAY, APRIL 29

MUSIC

DWNTWN @ The Sayers Club (Hollywood)
The shimmery synth-pop stylings of this L.A. duo are exactly what you need to help you make it through the rest of the work week. They released a new, self-titled EP today, and although its songs like "Til Tomorrow" and "Missing You" are uptempo and upbeat, Jamie Leffler and Robert Cepeda formed the band at a time when they were both going through difficult breakups (Jamie's was with Robert's brother). Maybe you can relieve some of your own heartbreak and inner turmoil out on the dance floor at tonight's show.

FRIDAY, APRIL 18

LITERARY

G. James Daichendt @ Book Soup (West Hollywood)

The art critic, professor and historian earned the name "Professor Street Art" once his investigation of the global phenomenon came out in 2012, entitled Stay Up!: Los Angeles Street Art. He continues to explore the subject in a new book centered on one of the world's most influential street artists, Shepard Fairey Inc.: Artist/Professional/Vandal. He presents and signs copies of this critical observation of Fairey's work and life tonight and also takes part in a conversation with noted guerrilla poster artist, Robbie Conal, who penned the book's foreword.

Also in theaters: 2 States; 13 Sins; Antboy; Authors Anonymous; Kid Cannabis; Make Your Move; Small Time; Tasting Menu; That Demon Within

Richard Kelly @ Aero Theatre (Santa Monica)
American Cinematheque hosts a screening of the director's daring fantasy drama from 2001, Donnie Darko, at the movie theater that was used for scenes in the film. Afterwards, there's a discussion with Kelly and a showing of the film that Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal), Gretchen (Jena Malone) and Frank the rabbit (James Duval) watched in the theater: Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead. I mean, what could get you in the Easter spirit more than a giant, monstrous rabbit with visions of the future?

FOOD

KTown Night Market @ Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools (Koreatown)

Not going to lie, this is the event I am most excited for this weekend since one of the things I love most about our city is the food and the myriad of cultures represented in L.A. cuisine. This multi-ethnicity is celebrated today and tomorrow with over a hundred food (more than 40 of them serving Korean dishes alone) and merchandise booths, carnival games, musical performances and a bar crawl. You can sample food from "Top Chef" Season 11 contestant Brian Huskey's upcoming restaurant Table 13, Ham Ji Park and Mama Musubi, in addition to Keizo Shimamoto's famous ramen burger. The event's Food Truck Alley features some of the city's best, including all the winners from the first three seasons of "The Great Food Truck Race": Grill 'Em All, The Lime Truck and Seoul Sausage Company.

SATURDAY, APRIL 19
The Singles (Joshua Hess)

MUSIC

Brokechella @ 590 Santa Fe Ave. (Downtown)
Just because you don't have fistfuls of cash for a ticket to a huge, corporate festival doesn't mean that you have to miss out on any the fun. For its fourth annual event, cARTel Collaborative Arts LA has expanded to a bigger venue, which means more art, music and comedy to brighten your day for just $10 presale or $20 at the door. Musical acts include the Singles, Hott MT, yOya, La Font, Earnest Blount, Raven Sorvino and many more on the fest's four stages. Added bonuses: You don't have to sit in hours of traffic or melt in the sun.

Record Store Day (Citywide)
It's the top day for any vinyl collector, with special releases available at all the independent stores you love in Los Angeles. From Record Surplus and Origami Vinyl to Gimme Gimme and Amoeba Music, vinyl aficionados shall flock to the shops for exclusives, reissues, giveaways and to socialize with their fellow audiophiles. Some releases to note include Deer Tick's Eel Bowel seven-inch, a Veruca Salt 10-inch, a new album from Thee Oh Sees and a limited edition split from Conor Oberst and Dawes.

SUNDAY, APRIL 20

FILM

Tribute to Harold Ramis @ New Beverly Cinema (Fairfax)

The film world lost a real gem when the comedic actor, director and writer passed away in February. Pay tribute to his cinematic legacy by heading to this double feature of some of his unforgettable work today or tomorrow. There's a screening of Stripes at 3 p.m. and 7: 30 p.m. today (7:30 p.m. Monday) and Groundhog Day at 5:05 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. today (9:35 p.m. Monday). Ramis co-wrote and starred in Ivan Reitman's 1981 war-comedy, Stripes, with Bill Murray as two friends who join the army. he directed and co-wrote 1993's Groundhog Day, which also starred Murray alongside Andie MacDowell as a weatherman who is forced to relive the same day over and over and over again.

TUESDAY, APRIL 22
Asher Roth (Brock Fetch)

MUSIC

Asher Roth @ The Troubadour (West Hollywood)

Nothing cures the post-weekend blues like dancing to some live music, and I can't think of a better way to spend a Tuesday evening than grooving to this hip-hop artist's tracks. The L.A. transplant (via Pennsylvania) releases his second full-length album, RetroHash, today and is celebrating with a release show at the Troubadour tonight. You'll find yourself swaying back and forth and clapping along to new songs like "Tangerine Girl" in no time flat.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23

FILM

Tron @ The Theatre at Ace Hotel (Downtown)

My favorite part of the old PeopleMover ride at Disneyland was the tunnel with scenes from the 1982 Disney film Tron. It felt like you fell into the video game just like in the movie and would see Jeff Bridges go whizzing by amidst the brightly colored lines of light at any moment. Cinespia is screening the film at 8:30 p.m. tonight at the gorgeous theater at Ace Hotel, and there will be vintage arcade games to play in the lobby, too.

FOOD

The Science of Sushi @ UCLA's Schoenberg Hall (Westwood)
Molecular gastronomy has been part of the vernacular for several years now, and food remains an intriguing subject when it comes to science. Tonight's lecture features a scientist – molecular biophysics professor Dr. Ole Mouritsen – and a sushi chef – Morihiro Onodera of Mori, Katsu, R-23, Matsuhisa and Takao – talking about the Japanese food art form. Mouritsen uncovers the science behind sashimi, nori, sushi rice and umami, while Onodera shares his approach to sushi and details on his partnership with a rice farmer in Uruguay.

FRIDAY, APRIL 11

DANCE

Paul Taylor Dance Company @ Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (Downtown)
From the car radio to a conversation between to women waiting in line at the drugstore, no matter where I go lately, I keep hearing people talk about this show. It's no wonder, though. Paul Taylor is one of the foremost American choreographers of the 20th century, and he is still at the helm of this world-renowned modern dance company. They have performed in more than 540 cities over 60 years, and this engagement at the Music Center spans their vast repertoire. But the program is only here for the next three days, so make sure to get your tickets ASAP.

MUSIC

Charlie Parr @ The Satellite (Silver Lake)

The Minnesota country bluesman released a new album, Hollandale, at the beginning of the year containing five 12-string instrumental songs that were completely improvised. Portions of these songs are going to be played tonight, but they are guaranteed to not be played in the same exact way they were on the album or at any other performance. That's what's so great about this style of music, and exactly what Parr loves about it. I was fortunate enough to see him perform at a backyard party last fall, and whether he's strumming an instrumental or belting out a tune, his is a show not to miss.

SPORTS

Toyota Grand Prix @ Long Beach Convention Center (Long Beach)

The 40th annual event speeds into Long Beach for three days of action-packed fun. Practice and qualifying rounds begin, while the Lifestyle Expo opens and a concert from Kinky round out today's activities. Saturday is the Pro/Celebrity Race (with the likes of Adrien Brody, Vanessa Marcil and Eric Braeden), a performance by Bad Company's Paul Rodgers, the TUDOR Championship and the Super Drift Finals. The big Indy race – with top drivers such as Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Helio Castroneves – takes place on Sunday afternoon.

SATURDAY, APRIL 12

CULTURE

Cesar Millan @ Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center (Thousand Oaks)
Before her dog passed away, my friend was in dire need of help with him, and Cesar Millan was able to train the naughty behavior right out of her and her beloved canine. For years, the Dog Whisperer has been able to bring balance to dogs of all breeds and their humans on his television shows. This is your chance to see him and his famous four-legged companion Junior demonstrate techniques live on stage. Just in case you need assistance with your pets at home, there is going to be a Q&A session with Millan during the event as well.

FOOD

The Grilled Cheese Invitational @ L.A. Center Studios (Westlake)
Eleven years ago Tim Walker created the grilled cheese competition between friends, and since then, it has grown into the largest cook-off in the country dedicated to the sandwich. Amateurs and professional chefs go head-to-head with their inventive takes on the classic sandwich. They're judged, and a champion is crowned. And, your ticket gets you in for a taste of these cheesy concoctions. Unfortunately, Walker has announced that this is the last invitational ever, so if you have never been to one before, don't let the opportunity pass you by.

LITERARY

Festival of Books @ USC Campus (South Los Angeles)
Even if you're not a book lover, you will enjoy this annual festival because aside from the author readings there are also art, celebrity, culinary, film, music and cultural events happening throughout the two days. Appearances include John Green (The Fault in Our Stars), Alicia Silverstone, B.J. Novak, Hugh Acheson, Terry McMillan, Mayim Bialik, Richard Lange and my favorite bloggers, the Fug Girls (Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan), who have also released two novels. New this year is the Festival After Dark on Saturday night with comedy, conversation and songs from Margaret Cho, Superchunk and Will Sheff.

SUNDAY, APRIL 13

PLAYS

"The Tallest Tree in the Forest" @ Mark Taper Forum (Downtown)

African-American lawyer, football player, actor, singer, political and civil rights activist Paul Robeson had such an amazing story. As the son of an escaped slave-turned-minister father and Quaker mother, he fought all odds to carve a place for himself and make a difference in the world. Obie Award-winning performer Daniel Beaty brings Robeson's story to the stage in this one-man show filled with inspirational words and songs.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16

MUSIC

Mike Sempert @ Hotel Café (Hollywood)
The songwriter and frontman of the Bay Area's Birds & Batteries is taking a break from the band and has relocated to Los Angeles. New songs sprouted in the months leading up to the transition in the form of an album called Mid Dream (releasing May 6 via Velvet Blue). Since he was preparing to marry his longtime love while making the album, it is a meditation on love and commitment, art and assuming the roles of adulthood. Sempert is celebrating the album's upcoming release with this show at Hotel Café, so expect to hear many of the new songs tonight.

THURSDAY, APRIL 3
Ahh... Youth! (Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts)

ART

Mike Kelley @ The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (Downtown)

A couple of months ago I was interviewing a musician who had studied art at USC under a protégé of Mike Kelley, and as we walked through MOCA we kept coming across posters announcing this exhibit. The Detroit transplant who attended CalArts (and eventually became a faculty member there), was a prominent fixture of the L.A. art scene from the mid-1970s until his suicide in 2012. The museum brights together over 250 pieces by the artist that incorporate found objects, painting and collages into thought-provoking and inspiring works of art. If you have yet to explore Mike Kelley's creations, this exhibit is the perfect opportunity. Admission is free on Thursday nights, but if you can't go tonight the exhibit is running through July 28.

FRIDAY, APRIL 4

Jackson reprise their Avengers roles in Captain America: The Winter Soldier; Dom Hemingway stars Jude Law as a larger-than-life criminal; Inspired by the true story of an African-American go-go dancer, Frankie and Alice stars Halle Berry and Stellan Skarsgård; Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac: Volume II; Under the Skin stars Scarlett Johansson as an alien who preys on human males. Also in theaters: 10 Rules for Sleeping Around; Afflicted; Alien Abduction; In the Blood; Island of Lemurs: Madagascar IMAX; Jinn; On the Other Side of the Tracks; The Players; The Unknown Known

Nicolas Cage and Werner Herzog @ Aero Theatre (Santa Monica)
American Cinematheque is holding a tribute to Cage with screening and discussions throughout the weekend. Tonight is a double feature of 2009's The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans and a 30th anniversary screening of Birdy. Acclaimed German director Herzog, who directed Cage in The Bad Lieutenant, and the actor participate in a discussion between films. Saturday's films are two of my favorites starring Cage, Adaptation. and Raising Arizona, while there's a screening of Joe and a discussion with Cage and the film's director, David Gordon Green, Sunday night.

MUSIC

Pigeon John @ The Roxy (West Hollywood)
Born John Kenneth Dunkin, Pigeon John grew up in Inglewood and began carving a place for himself in the underground hip-hop scene performing at open mics at places like Good Life Café. The world was exposed to his ability to meld hip-hop and pop with "The Bomb" off his 2010 effort, Dragon Slayer. After going through a divorce and other experiences, he's ready to release a sixth album, Encino Man, on April 29. Hear the new tracks live tonight when he shares the stage with the Grouch & Eligh, Eliot Lipp and DJ Fresh at the Roxy.

SATURDAY, APRIL 5
Jim Jefferies

COMEDY

Kevin & Bean's April Foolishness @ Shrine Auditorium (South Los Angeles)

Just when you thought you were safe from April Fool's hijinks. The L.A. radio personalities have always been big supporters of local comedians, so it's no surprise that their annual stand-up showcase is being headlined by some of the city's funniest. Australian transplant Jim Jefferies, Patton Oswalt, Adam Carolla, Tim Minchin, Doug Benson, Eddie Ifft and Taylor Williamson are joined by the always- entertaining Reggie Watts and the musical stylings of Mike Relm. All proceeds from the evening go to Fisher House and Cedars-Sinai's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

FOOD

Taco Madness @ Grand Park (Downtown)

Whenever I ask Angelenos what they miss most about Los Angeles when they're away, their answer inevitable involves Mexican food. No other dish exemplifies L.A. street culture like the taco. Find out who is going to be crowned winner of this year's Taco Madness, from noon to sunset at Grand Park. Dance to music from DJs like KCRW's Mario Cotto and Travis Holcombe, see some art curated by DoArtFoundation, grab a drink at the beer garden and eat yourself into a food coma with tacos from Mexicali, Mariscos Jalisco, Guerrilla Tacos, Carnitas El Momo and many more.

SUNDAY, APRIL 6

CULTURE

CicLAvia @ Wilshire Boulevard (between Grand Ave. & Fairfax Ave.)

CicLAvia bans cars from an L.A. thoroughfare for a day (from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), transforming it into a safe place for cyclists, walkers, rollerbladers and skateboarders to cruise the city. This particular route is along iconic Wilshire Boulevard, a six-mile stretch from Downtown to Miracle Mile. There are activity hubs at various points with fun activities, art, music, food and crafts for the whole family to enjoy. The forecast predicts a sunny Sunday with a high of 80 degrees, so it's going to be ideal weather for a walk/bike/skate through town.

SPORTS

Galaxy vs. Chivas USA @ StubHub Center (Carson)

The MLS season is in full swing, and it's time for the first SuperClásico of 2014. Although neither squad is high in the Western Conference standings, it's still early in the season, and a match between the two is always exciting. See Carlos Bocanegra, Dan Kennedy and Adolfo "Bofo" Bautista take on the Galaxy's Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane and Juninho, all starting at noon today.

MONDAY, APRIL 7
Walking Shapes (Courtney Rodwell)

MUSIC

Walking Shapes @ Bardot (Hollywood)
The New York City fivesome is set to release a new album, Taka Come On, this week and performs a set at Bardot tonight in anticipation. Their sophomore release is hauntingly beautiful, with buzzing, psychedelic guitars, a heavy bassline and visually evocative vocals. Seeing them live in such an intimate space is going to be quite an experience.

TUESDAY, APRIL 8

FOOD

Free Cone Day @ Ben & Jerry's (citywide)
Hooray, it's one of my favorite days of the year: Free Cone Day! Head to your local scoop shop (Union Station, Universal CityWalk, Burbank, Santa Monica, Sherman Oaks or the Howard Hughes Center) and pick up a free ice cream.

THURSDAY, MARCH 27
Timur and the Dime Museum (Jill Steinberg)

THEATER

Collapse @ REDCAT (Downtown)
It's impossible to classify the music of Timur and the Dime Museum in just one word. Led by the soaring vocals of classically trained tenor Timur Bekbosunov, the fivesome meld their haunting melodies with the stagecraft of post-punk cabaret in this operatic song cycle composed as a requiem mass. Their Collapse performance is set to video projections by artist Jesse Gilbert, with costumes designed by Victor Wilde of the Bohemian Society. Don't miss this world-premiere event on either Thursday, Friday or Saturday night.

TELEVISION

"Portlandia" @ LACMA (Miracle Mile)
Even though I've never lived in Portland, Ore., whenever I watch an episode of "Portlandia," I see myself or someone I know in at least one of the sketches. The show's creators, writers and stars – Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein – are just so spot-on with their commentary on society at large. The show is in the midst of its fourth season, and the duo will be on hand for a screening of two of the new episodes and a discussion at LACMA this evening.

FRIDAY, MARCH 28

FILM

In Theaters This Week
My pick of the week is the portrait of Cesar Chavez, directed by Diego Luna and starring Michael Peña, Rosario Dawson, America Ferrera and John Malkovich; Darren Aronofsky's version of the biblical story of Noah stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins and Emma Watson; Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Terrence Howard, Josh Holloway and Joe Maganiello in Sabotage. Also in theaters: Big Men; Finding Vivian Maier; It Felt Like Love; Locker 13; The Raid 2

MUSIC

Torches @ The Roxy (West Hollywood)
I've been enamored with the sounds of this L.A. duo (vocalist/guitarist Azad Cheikosman and drummer Eric Fabbro) since their If the People Stare EP was released last May, and they just released a new single, "Staring," from their upcoming album that was produced/engineered by Dave Newton (Henry Clay People, the Soft Pack) and mastered by Jeff Lipton (Arcade Fire, Wilco). The two are known for throwing a few Arcade Fire covers into the mix during their live sets, and if you haven't had the chance to catch them yet, this show with Moving Units is a great opportunity.

SATURDAY, MARCH 29
Tough Mudder (Weston Walker)

FITNESS

Tough Mudder @ Glen Helen Raceway (San Bernardino)
Maybe you need something more intense to release all of the week's stress and frustration. If so, then  this Tough Mudder event, happening today and tomorrow, is for you. The hardcore 10- to 12-mile obstacle course of challenges is designed to test your all-around strength, stamina, mental toughness and teamwork. At the end, you are guaranteed to be covered in mud, with sore muscles and a few bruises, but you'll also have some major bragging rights.

DANCE

A Taste of Dance: Movie Moves @ The Music Center Plaza (Downtown)
I am such a sucker for dance movies. I mean, who doesn't love it when the cast breaks out into their best moves in the middle of a scene? For just $1 per lesson, you can learn the steps to some of the greatest dance films of all time. Routines include Flashdance, Pulp Fiction, Dirty Dancing, (500) Days of Summer, Singing' in the Rain, Saturday Night Fever and Slumdog Millionaire.

FOOD

Ramen Yokocho @ Santa Anita Park (Arcadia)
Last year's festival was so packed that they've moved to a much larger venue for this Saturday and Sunday. Never fear though, all of the ramen purveyors that you love are still going to be on hand offering a taste of their famous noodle soup for $8 a bowl. L.A. participants include Daikokuya, Men Oh and Hayatemaru, while Las Vegas' Monta, San Diego's Shalala and Japan's Mattou Seimen are also part of the 14-strong lineup. Saturday the track celebrates Japan Family Fun Day, so there are plenty of cultural exhibitions and the Tokyo City Cup to be enjoyed along with the ramen fest.

SUNDAY, MARCH 30
Cody Chesnutt (Bohbot)

MUSIC

Cody Chesnutt @ Troubadour (West Hollywood)
One of my favorite songs from the Roots, "The Seed (2.0)," is actually a remake of a track that was originally on the Atlanta-based neo-soul troubadour's debut album, 2002's The Headphone Masterpiece. Cody Chesnutt took a period away from music but thankfully returned with his sophomore effort, Landing on a Hundred, in 2012. His vocals are still silky smooth, and his message is as powerful as ever. Hear the newer material and some of the older ditties when his B Sides and Remixes Tour swings into the Troubadour this evening.

TUESDAY, APRIL 1

FILM

Leave The World Behind @ ArcLight Cinemas (Hollywood)
The EDM supergroup, consisting of DJs/producers Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso, announced their One Last Tour trek and proceeded to sell over a million tickets worldwide in just one week. This documentary, executively produced by Jonas Åkerlund, follows Swedish House Mafia in their final moments as a trio, from making the decision to disband to the last note of the tour. The film screens today and April 3 at the ArcLight and April 4 at Westwood Crest Theatre.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2

BOOKS

Nelson George @ Book Soup (West Hollywood)

I vividly remember singing and dancing along to episodes of "Soul Train" when I was barely in kindergarten. Author and filmmaker Nelson George just released a new book documenting the groundbreaking television variety show called The Hippest Trip in America: Soul Train and the Evolution of Culture & Style. The show's producer and host Don Cornelius shares memories from its time, along with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Rosie Perez and Jodie Watley. Join George in conversation with "Soul Train" dancer Marco De Santiago at Book Soup tonight.

THURSDAY, MARCH 20

MUSIC

Ski Lodge @ Bootleg Bar (Westlake)
Andrew Marr, the multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter at the helm of Ski Lodge, put everything into the New York City foursome's debut, which released last summer and was aptly titled Big Heart. Tracks like "Anything to Hurt You," "You Can't Just Stop Being Cruel" and "Just To Be Like You" deal with heavy emotions, but won't put you into a deep depression whenever you listen to them. They just released a new song last month, "Our Love Is Over Now," that is quite gorgeous, so I'm curious to see what else they've got up their sleeves.

FRIDAY, MARCH 21

COMEDY

Bob Saget @ Club Nokia (Downtown)

While it's been almost 19 years since "Full House" left the air, sitcom fans are bracing themselves to say goodbye to another beloved show with Bob Saget, who provides the voice of the narrator in "How I Met Your Mother." With coarse stand-up routines and an in-your-face appearances in "Entourage" and The Aristocrats, Saget has shown the world he can go bolder and more vulgar than any of his family-friendly roles allowed him to. He delves even deeper into his dark side with his publishing debut, Dirty Daddy: The Chronicles of a Family Man Turned Filthy Comedian (available April 8) and its support tour which hits Club Nokia tonight.

CULTURE

Musink @ OC Fair & Event Center (Costa Mesa)

The seventh-annual music and tattoo festival is being presented by Travis Barker and takes place over three days this year. Over 300 of the world's finest tattoo artists put their finest pieces on display, and there are daily tattoo contests in categories like best back piece, sleeve and music-related. Friday's musical lineup includes Love Canal, the Vandals and Descendents. Saturday features Rittz, the Transplants and Tech N9ne. Soul Search, Strife, H2O, Judge and Gorilla Biscuits perform on Sunday.

FILM

In Theaters This Week
Crime thriller Blood Ties stars Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Marion Cotillard, Zoe Saldana and Mila Kunis; Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet in the film adaptation of Veronica Roth's first installment of the Divergent trilogy; Jake Gyllenhaal in Enemy; Muppets Most Wanted is a case of mistaken identity involving Kermit the Frog and stars Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Ty Burrell alongside all of our beloved characters; Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac: Volume 1 with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater and Uma Thurman. Also in theaters: A Birder's Guide to Everything; Cheap Thrills; God's Not Dead; Jodorowsky's Dune; McCanick

SATURDAY, MARCH 22

ART

L.A. Heat: Taste Changing Condiments @ Chinese American Museum (Downtown)

With all of the hubbub over the Sriracha factory shutdown earlier this year, the spicy condiment has never been so popular. While there is always a bottle of Sriracha in our refrigerator, Tapatio is another of our most frequently used hot sauces. Either way, both have a definite impact on Los Angeles' culinary landscape, hence this exhibit featuring curated work from artists like Daniel Gonzalez, Trinh Mai, Eye One and Henry Taylor. Running through July 12.

FOOD

Winners' Circle BBQ Championship @ Santa Anita Park (Arcadia)
Go ahead and try to look at the photos on the event's site without salivating. It's impossible. The West Coast's top pit masters gather for this annual competition for $15,000 and the chance to represent California in the big national event. Get a taste of their best barbecued offerings, take in some live music, arts and crafts and bet on a horse race or two.

SUNDAY, MARCH 23

FOOD

Los Angeles Seafood Festival @ Placita Olvera (Olvera Street)
Do you go nuts over a good ceviche? Perhaps, a plate of fresh oysters is your thing. Whether it's a bowl of chowder, poached salmon steak or heaping pile of fish and chips you crave, this fest has you covered. Aside from the plethora of seafood dishes, there are carnival games, crafts, musical acts and all kinds of exhibits to check out from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

MONDAY, MARCH 24

MUSIC

yOya @ Bootleg Bar (Westlake)

It's easy to become enamored with the L.A. duo just by listening to their new single, "Fool's Gold," one time. Although once you hear it, you'll wind up hitting repeat again and again. Alex Pfender and Noah Dietterick blend elements of classic folk with electronic beats and synthesizers, creating a sound that is just right. Fall in love with more of their tunes when they play Bootleg tonight with the brilliant Moses Sumney.

TUESDAY, MARCH 25

MUSIC

The National @ Shrine Auditorium (South Los Angeles)
I'm sure you know that the National is literally a band of brothers – with Aaron and Bryce Dessner on guitar, Bryan and Scott Devendorf on drums and bass – so the only member without a sibling in the group, vocalist Matt Berninger invited his younger brother, Tom, to join them on tour as a roadie. Tom chose to film the experience as a documentary entitled Mistaken For Strangers, which Michael Moore calls "one of the best documentaries about a band that I've ever seen." The film makes its theatrical premiere tonight, along with a full set from the band who released their latest album, Trouble Will Find Me, last May.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26

COMEDY

By the Way, In Conversation with Jeff Garlin @ Largo at the Coronet (Mid-City West)
In addition to currently starring in "The Goldbergs," the comedian also hosts a series of casual talks with different personalities that are part of his By the Way podcasts. Tonight's talk is with one of Garlin's comedy contemporaries, writer/director/actor/comedian Stephen Merchant. The co-writer and co-director of "The Office," Merchant was also in part of "The Ricky Gervais Show" and starred in "Extras" and, most recently, "Hello Ladies." He can make me laugh with his facial expressions alone, so I'm sure an evening with him and Garlin together is going to be hilarious.

Free shuttles are running from venue to venue all night long, so just grab the first parking spot you see and hop on one.

CULTURE

VaVoom – A Rock 'N' Roll Circus @ El Rey Theater (Miracle Mile)
If you're a fan of Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart and never miss a Lucha VaVoom event, then this show is for you. Promising a night of mayhem, music and thrills, this rock 'n' roll circus features performances by characters from the famed Mexican wrestling and burlesque troupe, all presided over by Stewart "The Ringmaster." He and his band are set to provide musical goodness, and I expect the evening will turn out to be much like Stewart's latest music video for the first single from his Lucky Numbers album, "Every Single Night."

Macy. The evening wraps up with 1998's Happiness from director Todd Solondz with Hoffman, Lara Flynn Boyle, Dylan Baker, Cynthia Stevenson and Jane Adams. SUNDAY, MARCH 16

BOOKS

Arthur Hoyle @ Book Soup (West Hollywood)
One of my favorite places in all of California is the Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur, and  Miller's years spent in the Central Coast area are the focus of Arthur Hoyle's new book, The Unknown Henry Miller: A Seeker in Big Sur. Hoyle recounts the events of the literary great's life, quoting from Miller's correspondence during the years from 1944 to 1961 when Miller wrote The Rosy Crucifixion trilogy, married and divorced twice, raised two children and painted watercolors. Discuss the book with the author at 4 p.m., then have Hoyle sign your copy of the wonderful new biography at Book Soup.

MONDAY, MARCH 17

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!
There are so many drink specials and events at bars and pubs throughout the city. Head to your favorite one, have a pint for me and be safe!

TUESDAY, MARCH 18
Jacob Hashimoto's Gas Giant (Cesar Arredondo)

ART

Jacob Hashimoto's Gas Giant @ MOCA Pacific Design Center (West Hollywood)
Walking through this exhibit is a tranquil way to recover from last night's shenanigans. Thousands of paper sheets are used to transform the space into an entirely different environment at the hands of the New York artist. Hashimoto uses traditional Japanese kite-making techniques and painting to create the three-dimensional structures of this third and final edition of Gas Giant – its first L.A. presentation and the artist's first solo museum exhibition in California. Each installation is breathtaking and must be seen in person to be truly appreciated, so make sure to head over the Pacific Design Center before Gas Giant is over on June 8.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19

MUSIC

Bleachers @ Troubadour (West Hollywood)

This is a new project from fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff, who was also frontman of Steel Train. While he is set to release a debut album from Bleachers later this year, the debut single "I Wanna Get Better" should be enough to get you to this show. From the opening bars, it's incredibly hard not to jump up and start dancing to the song. I'm sure you'll be listening to it over and over on the way to the Troubadour so you can sing along to every word.
